I’m currently completing a masters degree in Social Work (and am pleased to report that it has gone great). So back when I first applied for this course, a very close male friend of mine, desperately concerned about my choice of postgraduate degree, decided to ask me this -

"You do know what social work is, don’t you?"

"Considering I applied for it, yeah."

"So you know you’ll have to talk to people who may be going through serious problems? You’ll have to talk to people who could get violent and angry, you know. It could be very scary and very dangerous."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"I just want to make sure you know what you’re getting in for…"

"Because you’re the expert?"

"No, but I’ve seen documentaries. I only wanted to make sure you knew what it was all about."

Yes, ladies, he has seen documentaries! And little ol’ me? Gosh, well, uh, I’m hardly an expert! I only read some silly old textbooks, shadowed a social worker about for a bit, pottered around in some care homes… y’know, nothing substantial like documentaries!
