I am a graduate student. In one of my classes, after I gave a presentation on a historical figure, our professor asked my opinion of X Book, which we had read in class recently and which had briefly talked about the woman I had presented on. I expressed my opinion that I had some concerns with the way the author compared the woman to other women of her time period, specifically that the author specifically stated that pregnancy and childbirth was what defined a woman as a woman. The professor nods and asks if anyone has questions regarding my presentation. There are a few reasonable questions and critiques before a (male of course) classmate tells me that examining “that kind of thing” is “just nitpicking” and that “after awhile you’ll stop doing that, there’s just no point.”
